My reality check:
I am a cis, queer, Xicana, femme, working-class, southern woman. I am privileged because I am cis, have a college degree, am a documented citizen in my country, am employed full-time, have health insurance, and have a close (though somewhat tumultuous) relationship with my filial family. I am oppressed because I am a woman, a Person of Color/Xicana, I am queer, I present as femme, and though I have a full-time job and college degree, I am still very much a working-class diva.
Some important concepts*:
These are oversimplifications of privilege and systemic oppression.
Oppression = Manifestation of Power + Prejudice
This is applicable to all forms of oppression, such as: racism, cissexism, classism, transphobia, ableism, etc.
Many people are oppressed and privileged at the same time. This is intersectionality. A cis middle-class White woman can be oppressed by hegemonic masculinity while being oppressive to trans women, people of color, and working class White people. Commenters who use their own oppression as an excuse for being oppressive to others will either be deleted or used as an example to create dialogue.
Oppression is systemic and not just individual acts.
When I talk about women, I mean *all* women. If there is a need for me to differentiate between cis or trans women, I will. I am privileged and will do my damn best to be a good ally but if I fuck up with my privilege, please let me know and I apologize if anything happens in the future.
There are more than two genders. Some people don’t like to label their genders.
Oppression against queer people is rooted in their transgression of their ascribed gender roles.
Transphobia =/= as Homophobia.
*This is just a beginning. I plan to add more.
